on-page vs off-page SEO
On-Page vs Off-Page SEO: What's the Difference?
On-page SEO is everything you control on your website; off-page SEO is your reputation everywhere else. Both matter — but the order you do them in matters too.
What on-page SEO covers
Titles, meta descriptions, headings, content quality, internal links, image alt text, schema markup, and page speed. It is fully within your control and produces the fastest feedback — changes are recrawled within days or weeks.
What off-page SEO covers
Backlinks from other websites, brand mentions, reviews, citations, and digital PR. These signals tell Google how the rest of the web regards you. They take longer to build and are never fully within your control.
Which comes first
Almost always on-page. Links pointing at a confusing, slow, poorly structured page waste their power. Fix the foundation, then build authority on top of it.
